When minutes matter...
Our staff has vital experience to meet any emergency-care challenge. Through the latest in communications, transportation and technology, the Island Hospital ER is able to quickly treat patients despite the difficulties present in a rural island environment.
- Arriving Med Flights achieve a 10 – 15 minute response time from the islands.
- Departing flights transfer patients to facilities in Seattle, Bellingham and other locations as needed. Incidentally, we're told time and again what a fine job we do stabilizing and readying a person for transfer.
- Once stabilized, persons with head or spinal cord injuries, as well as heart surgery patients are transferred to specialized facilities.

Quality Proven by Nationwide Study
National Research Measures ER Services Recently, a nationally recognized healthcare-research firm conducted telephone surveys to discover how patients feel about their emergency room treatment and care. More than 200 patients who had been seen in Island Hospital's ER (representing 25.8% of those seen during the month) were contacted. Their responses were evaluated with those of patients who had visited other ERs in our region and in the Western U.S.
Island Hospital Earns Top Spot The results were outstanding! Island received the highest rankings in 25 out 26 areas, with scores generally in the high 90s (out of 100). Moreover, the Western U.S. database revealed that IH set the benchmark in nine of 12 key areas, and came within one percentage point of achieving another two.
