Free Health-Insurance Counseling for Everyone
SHIBA/Helpline offers free counseling to persons of all ages, answering all of your health-insurance questions.
We provide insight on Medicare, Medicare supplements, WA Basic Health Plans, billing issues long-term insurance and Medicaid individual policies and more!
The SHIBA/Helpline (Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors) is provided under the supervision of the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner and sponsored locally by Island Hospital.
Services are provided by individuals from a range of backgrounds who have undergone Island Hospital SHIBA Volunteer training. This coursework comprises involves four intensive days of specialized training in health-insurance information by the State of Washington Office of the Insurance Commissioner.
There is absolutely no cost to you for SHIBA/Helpline services.

Where are SHIBA/Helpline services located?
In Anacortes: Island Hospital 299-4212. Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Appointments are recommended.
On Lopez Island: At Lopez Island Medical Clinic, call 468-2245 for appointment.
In Orcas Island Orcas Island Medical Center, call 376-2561 for appointment.
In Friday Harbor: Call Curt Van Hyning at (206) 423-2297 for an appointment.
In Oak Harbor: Oak Harbor Senior Center, call 279-4580 for appointment.

Interested in Becoming a SHIBA/Helpline Volunteer?
Although our SHIBA volunteers may come from varied backgrounds (such as teaching, accounting, healthcare administration, the military or law enforcement), they all share a few common interests and abilities:
- They have a keen desire to serve the public.
- They're able to make a connection with a wide range of people.
- They're adept at reading and interpreting insurance language.
- They're skillful communicators with a knack for explaining things.
