Meeting spiritual needs at Island Hospital
Island Hospital chaplains are skilled area clergy and lay ministers who receive additional training in the special needs of the healthcare environment. They provide emotional and pastoral support to patients, family members and staff in times of medical crisis -- 24 hours a day, seven days per week. The program is overseen by Pastoral Care Coordinator Pastor Chris Anderson.

Offering diverse, specialized support when needed...

Each Volunteer Chaplain serves as a "first-responder" on-call in medical or pastoral crises and conducts pastoral-care "rounds" -- visiting patients and nurses -- in the hospital. The Chaplain-on-call is available upon patient request. Patients, families or visitors need only to ask a nurse to contact the Volunteer Chaplain.

Although the Chaplains are members of our local religious community, one of their primary roles is that of a therapeutic listener.

Meeting the needs of the individual...
Chaplains engage religious and ethical topics when requested and provide or make referrals for sacramental care when appropriate. Their primary service, however, is to offer general emotional, bereavement and crisis support. They also disseminate information and make referrals to appropriate groups or agencies when special support services are needed.

Our Chapel

The Island Hospital Chapel provides a unique retreat setting for families, patients and staff to pray, meditate or simply to be alone with their thoughts. Adjacent to Central Registration, the Chapel holds literature available for anyone who wishes spiritual or uplifting reading.

Open seven days a week, 24 hours a day, the purpose of theChapel is to help meet the diverse faiths and spiritual needs found in our community. It has no permanent altar or religious artifact.  Temporary religious symbols may be brought into the Chapel for faith specific services.
