Building the New Island Hospital...

The concept to renovate Island Hospital was born when hospital Administrators and Commissioners were involved in strategic-planning meetings in October 2000, answering how the organization was going to meet the needs of a growing community. Most of the key services at Island were housed in very limited space – without room to expand in place – and there was little, if any, room to bring additional medical services for which there was local demand.

Planning and discussion with community members continued over the next two years and in 2002, Island Hospital's 40th year, the Board of Commissioners and Administration approved a Master Facilities Plan. This plan sought to ensure the ability to provide quality care for the next 40 years by approving a concept that would benefit patients and their families, as well as professional staff.

It was determined that the $40 million would be raised via a $30.5-million, voter-approved General Obligation Bond. The remaining $9.5 million would come from hospital revenues, grants and private donations.

On Sept. 14, 2004, voters within Skagit County Public Hospital District No. 2 passed the largest bond to date in the community by one of the largest margins in local history as 78% of those voting said "yes."

The goal was to build and renovate over five years while maintaining 100% of the hospital's service in full operation.
