Jennifer Moehl, RN, BSN, OCN
Jennifer Moehl is a Registered Nurse in the Merle Cancer Care Center. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Biola University in southern California and is an Oncology Certified Nurse.
Q. Why did you become a nurse?
A. I primarily became a nurse because I find great satisfaction and a sense of fulfillment by helping people. I combined that with my love of science and my fascination with the human body and how miraculous it is, and I arrived at nursing.
Q. What do you find most challenging about your job?
A. The toughest thing about my job is being willing to initiate and have difficult conversations with oncology patients who are trying to make some really hard choices. Also, I would say watching people experience suffering on a consistent basis is tough. We do what we can to help, but sometimes there's a feeling of powerlessness and loss.
Q. Who inspires you and why?
A. People who love well and forgive easily inspire me. I'll throw some big names out there and venture to say that I think Mother Theresa and Jesus practiced these two things pretty regularly. I see these attributes in my friends and family and it inspires me to grow in these areas. I would also say that people who have a good sense of humor and laugh heartily inspire me… you know who you are! Laughter is good medicine for the soul.
Q. Where did you grow up?
A. I grew up in a small town in the central valley of California called Los Banos. I would be a millionaire if I had a dollar for every time someone said, "Oh, so you grew up in the bathrooms?!" Truth is that it was named Los Banos by Spanish settlers due to the natural hot springs that were there at the time. “And now you know the rest of the story."
Q. What was your first job?
A. My very first job was working at our local movie theater. My first job as an RN was at City of Hope Medical Center in Duarte, CA in the Bone Marrow Transplant unit.
A. I like pina coladas and getting caught in the rain! I enjoy hiking with my family, listening to live music, dancing, running, watching football, road trips, reading, exploring and basically most things adventurous, spending time with friends and family and long walks on the beach. I would like to take photography classes to improve my photo taking skills. I really love looking at pretty pictures. Also, I'd like to take piano lessons. I'm a lefty so I must have some creative juices lurking somewhere. I just need to discover them. Also, I would like to say that I feel like I just placed a personal ad to get a date.
A. I have two sons and a husband whom I have been married to for 15 years this July. We have many extended family members that live in Anacortes.
A. I have a yellow Lab named Busta. Middle name is Move...yes, I'm serious. Some of you who were born in 1960's-1990's will probably get it. He keeps me really busy. He is a purveyor of fine socks (clean or dirty) and sofa cushions.
Q. Favorite book
A. This is tough! My two favorite non-fiction books would be Traveling Mercies by Ann Lamott and Keep Your Love On by Danny Silk. My favorite fiction books would have to be To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkein and The Help by Kathryn Stockett.
Q. Favorite quote
A. "It's funny: I always imagined when I was a kid that adults had some kind of inner toolbox full of shiny tools: the saw of discernment, the hammer of wisdom, the sandpaper of patience. But then when I grew up I found that life handed you these rusty bent old tools -- friendships, prayer, conscience, honesty -- and said, 'Do the best you can with these, they will have to do.' And mostly, against all odds, they do." --- Anne Lamott
"It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them." --- Ralph Waldo Emerson
"A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men." --- Willy Wonka
Q. Favorite music/song/group
A. I listen and love a variety of music (except most country and rap). Some bands I love: The Lonely Forest, Lorde, Bob Marley, The Lumineers, Mumford and Sons, Fleetwood Mac, James Taylor, Muse, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Jeff Buckley and U2.
Q. Favorite place to vacation
A. Hands down I would say Maui. It has everything I love on vacation --- sunshine and 70 degree weather all day and night, beautiful beaches with warm water, and shave ice.
Q. Interesting fact(s) about yourself
A. It has always been a deep down desire of mine to do more traveling as I love learning about other cultures. Eventually, I would like to get my Nurse Practioner degree with an emphasis in palliative care but we shall see. I try not to plan out my life too much as so much can change from one moment to the next. You never know which direction your path will lead.
