Suzie DuPuis, RD
Q: Why did you become a dietician/nutritionist?
A: I am very interested in health. I love to keep learning; there is always something new to learn in nutrition and I love to learn new ways to be healthier. Also, probably the biggest factor is, I love food, cooking and eating!
Q: What do you find most challenging about your job?
A: Working with people who really don’t want to make changes for better health. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. As I mentioned earlier, there is always something new to learn about nutrition so keeping up with current literature is also a challenge. Also, people who come for a dietary consult that already know everything because they have read it on the internet.
Q: Where did you grow up?
A: On Whidbey Island. How lucky is that!
Q: Who inspires you and why?
A: There are lots of people who inspire me. Among them are some of my favorite sailors, such as my friend Ed. Ed is about 80 years old. He doesn’t get around very quickly anymore, has a super stiff neck so he can’t look up without bowing backwards, yet he keeps getting out and doing things (sailing, racing, motorcycle riding). People who are optimistic and keep on living, even when the going gets tough inspire me. Like our friend who discovered he had terminal pancreatic cancer so he threw himself a going away party!
Q: What was your first job?
A: My first job out of high school was cleaning at Rosario Resort on Orcas Island. My first professional job was working at Ballard Hospital in the kitchen and working up to dietetic technician, then dietitian when my schooling was completed.
A: I have lots of hobbies but my favorite is probably sailing, cruising and racing. I also enjoy downhill skiing, hiking, bicycling and cooking. I like to play the piano and am learning the guitar. I enjoy karaoke (with close friends only) and love to dance. Zumba is the best workout!
A: I am married to my dear husband, Rex, of 33 years; we have three daughters, Stacey, Morgan and Desiree; and one grandson, Linkin (Stacey) with another on the way (Desi).
A: We love dogs. Buffie, our border collie, is part of the family.
Q: Favorite Book
A: I don’t find a lot of time for pleasure reading anymore, though I love to read. What pops into my mind are the Harry Potter series of books. They are so much fun!
Q: Favorite Quote
A: “If the wind is not taking you where you want; change your sails.”
Q: Favorite music
A: Too complicated to choose. I love bluegrass, country, pop, rock, classical, alternative… who would want to limit themselves to one type of music?
Q: Favorite place to vacation
A: Cabos San Jose, Mexico. If we can’t make it that far, the San Juan Islands.
